- Can Caffeine Make Breast Lumps Tender?
-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QUESTION: For years, I have kept away from coffee and tea, as well as other
- caffeine containing beverages, because I was told that it could make the lumps
- in my breast become more tender. During a recent checkup with my family
- doctor, he told me not to worry about this, as the story wasn't true. Is this
- something new, or have I been laboring under a misconception for all these
- many years?
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- ANSWER: I suppose I would consider this information under the category of
- "relatively new". The story about caffeine and tender breast lumps
- (fibrocystic breasts) has been around for quite some time, and was always
- considered good advice until recently. The basis for this counsel was a
- research paper published over 15 years ago which showed that a small group of
- women did indeed experience increased pain in their breasts that was
- associated with caffeine. However, when other researchers tried to reproduce
- these results in other investigations over the years, they were unable to
- arrive at the same conclusion. With little evidence to support the theory,
- your doctor is on the right track. However, it is easy enough to find out if
- the theory is true in your case. Try a few cups of coffee as an experiment.
- If your breasts then become tender, don't do it again.
